Economic Impact
When the first comic books were made, they were reprints of newspaper comic strips. As the industry grew, a cultural and economic identity was made. As sales lowered, DC and Marvel began using characters for television. Comic books were created based on The Great Depression where America was in great need of money. During the 30's and 40's, people wanted cheap forms of entertainment, such as comic books. Free Comics became very popular because of the Depression and deflation which kept the printing press from working, wasting less money and time. Since comics were cheap their popularity increased continuously. Comics Monthly, the first monthly comic, was only 10 cents, so there were many readers. Other comics were the same price, such as Famous Funnies and The Funnies. A comic that costs 10 cents could have been traded, which increased the value. In the early 50's there were huge sales, so they tried to begin the genre again but after a couple issues there was not enough attention. In fact, Marvel Land a theme park section was made after one of the largest comic book companies, Marvel. The theme park section is called Marvel Land which is located inside of Islands of Adventures. Two out of five of the top grossing movies of this year were based off of comic books. One of them, The Avengers, was ranked as number one.
