Background Information
The first comic book ever made was The Adventures of Odabiah Oldbuck. Originally, comic books were not about superheroes, but instead about horror and terror. Comics such as “Tales From the Crypt” and “Shock Suspenstories were very popular at that time. The two comics were made from a third comic book company known as EC. However, around October 1954, a code that all comic books had to follow was released. It was known as The Comics Code Authority, and banned many things in comic books, such as the words horror and terror, and any showings of gruesome details. This killed out comics for a little while, as almost all comics were affected by the code. That comic was MAD Magazine. Many people believed that comics killed brain cells in children, and banned their kids from reading them. Some towns went as far as to burn comics in bonfires. However, as proven today, comics actually help kids engage their brains, due to their bright colors and characterization.
